My Top 5 Sunscreen Recommendations for the Summer
Sunscreen is the most important part of a solid skincare routine. Some benefits of wearing sunscreen everyday includes: decreasing the risk of developing skin cancer in the future, protecting against and preventing sun burns, decreasing the likelihood of early signs of aging like fine lines/wrinkles, and decreasing hyperpigmentation and avoiding uneven skin tone. According to dermatologists, you should be wearing at least an spf30 sunscreen everyday, and a spf50 sunscreen if you are in an extremely sunny and hot area. The recommended amount you should be using on your face and neck is half a teaspoon (2-3 fingers worth), and about an ounce of sunscreen (1 shot glass) for your entire body. You should also be reapplying throughout the day!
If you are looking for some great sunscreen recommendations, here are 5 amazing sunscreens that are fragrance free, and will not leave the skin with a ghostly white cast.
Colorscience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield SPF50
This is a tinted sunscreen that gives very light coverage, but a beautiful finish. They have 3 versions: glow, original and bronze. Glow gives a pearlescent and healthy luminosity, original is lightweight and silky with a natural finish, and bronze is for those with a darker complexion looking for that sunkissed summer skin. It is formulated with soothing ingredients like Allantoin, Bisabolol and Vitamin E, and has niacinamide, which is great for brightening, balancing oil production and is anti-acne. It’s a broad spectrum sunscreen so it will protect against both UVA and UVB rays, and is water resistant for up to 40 minutes. Colorscience also has an amazing spf collection with powder susncreen, stick sunscreens, spfs with a matte finish for oily skin types, blushes, and more! I highly recommend that you check out their website for the full sun protection collection.
EltaMD UV Sport Broad Spectrum SPF50
This is an amazing sunscreen if you are an athlete or someone who just enjoys outdoor activities like swimming, scuba diving, hiking, etc. It works well for all skin types and tones, offers UVA/UVB protection and is water resistant for up to 80 minutes. If you are someone with more dry and dehydrated skin, this is a great sunscreen to look into. It’s extremely moisturizing, fragrance free and has no white cast. This sunscreen will leave you with the most dewy and glowy finish for healthy and plump skin. It’s jam packed with antioxidants and alleviates irritated skin with soothing ingredients like centella asiatica extract, purslane extract and houttuynia cordata extract. It brightens skin complexion with niacinamide, and keeps the skin hydrated with ceramides and 3 types of hyaluronic acids.
Avene Mineral High Protection Tinted Compact SPF 50
This is a great SPF to try if you are looking for a hassle free way to reapply sunscreen over your makeup. This is a compact powder that you can take easily on the go. It not only is SPF50 and broad spectrum, but will also set your makeup in place. It’s particularly great for those with more oily skin as it leaves a non-greasy and matte finish. It is water resistant for up to 40 minutes and will not irritate sensitive or acne prone skin. It comes in two shades, one for lighter skin and one for dark skin.

Cerave Hydrating Sunscreen Face Sheer Tint SPF30
This is a really nice everyday sunscreen with light coverage. I wouldn’t say it's a universal shade though, but you can probably get away with it if you have light-medium or medium skin tone. I really love this sunscreen to achieve that no-makeup makeup look. It leaves the skin with a natural glow, and I have combination skin and this does not make the skin look greasy or oily. If you have acne prone skin, this sunscreen may be a good one to consider as it is formulated with ingredients for blemished skin like niacinamide, salicylic acid and phytosphingosine. It also has 3 types of ceramides to keep the skin properly hydrated. This is also very accessible as you can find this sunscreen at almost any drugstore!

DRMTLGY Broad Spectrum SPF45
This is probably my holy grail sunscreen. I have been purchasing this product for the past 2 years and my skin loves this! It’s free of alcohol, essential oils and fragrance, great for sensitive types, and leaves the skin with a gorgeous pearlescent glow. I personally didn’t notice any white cast with this sunscreen, but I heard from others that it may leave a minimal cast that eventually disappears after 15-20 minutes. It contains niacinamide to brighten skin tone, and sodium hyaluronate to hydrate the skin. This is also my go to sunscreen when my skin is irritated and I change to a very minimal skincare routine for a week. I cleanse the skin, use a hydrating and soothing toner and then use this sunscreen as my moisturizer + spf, and my skin loves it! They also have a tinted version of this sunscreen if you want a little more coverage. I have yet to try it, but it’s on my wishlist!
